Texas 2x2 Books/Texas Bluebonnet

The 2X2 Committee‘s charge is to produce a list of 20 recommended books for children, age two to grade two.

Each year, 20 books are chosen as the “Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List” by the TBA selection committee. If students read a minimum of five books from the current master list (or have the books read aloud to them), they have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title during the month of January each year. The author of the book receiving the most votes statewide is declared the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award.

In the library, we are encouraging all students to read as many of these nominated books as they can. I will also read from these book lists from time to time. They are very popular with our students, so you and your child may want to visit the public library to check out a copy as well.

Accelerated Reader (AR)

Accelerated Reader is an computer program to assess a student's comprehension of a story read.

Students are encouraged to select a book on their reading level during library check out. After students have read their book, they go on the computer to take a comprehension test. Based on the student's score and the point value of the book, the student earns points. At the end of the nine week grading period, students can earn a reward if they have met their grade level point goal and comprehension score goal.

The book level and point value for each AR book is located on the back cover if the book has an Accelerated Reader Quiz available.

Parents can check their child's AR progress by signing into Home Connect

Got Caught Reading

We want to catch our students reading. If you catch your child reading (at home, in the car, at a game, anywhere), please take a picture and send it to me. I will post it on our "look Who Got Caught Reading" bulletin board! They love seeing themselves displayed!

Makerspace

A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools.

Students will have the opportunity to express creativity, problem solving, communication and team building  in the library through the use of Legos, puzzles, Play-do, and many other activities.

Technology

Technology is in the forefront of everything we do. The students at Pyburn will have many opportunities to use technology in the library so they become effective 21st century learners. They will learn skills that will help them be successful throughout their educational career, such as using the online catalog, searching for information to a research question, and becoming a positive digital citizen.

Students will use the interactive board to reinforce learning. They will use iPads/tablets to help find information and to present their information in a real life setting. They will learn how to appropriately respond to information they see and hear through media.
